symbol on your keyboard used to denote the word “at” and commonly used when referring to or in creation of uniform resource locators (see URL)

ad

commonly used short term for “advertisement”

advertising

marketing technique, calling public attention to one’s product or service

address book

saved list of contacts

affiliate marketing

programs allowing affiliate merchants to  get paid if visitors complete an action

algorithm

set of rules for solving a problem in a finite number of steps, as for finding the greatest common divisor

anti-spam software

software designed to eliminate “spam” through a series of heuristics, as it enters a system, program or email

app

abbreviation for the word “application”

application

program designed to perform a specific function, usually affecting one more devices, either virtual or physical

article

one or more pages of text/information covering a specific topic

auto-responder

computer program that automatically answers e-mail sent to it

B

black hat

process of using improper SEO parameters in order to increase traffic to a site; the method of attaching one’s wireless connector to an existing network illegally, without privilege granted account holder of wireless signal bandwidth

blog

(Noun) a web log

(Verb) to write entries in, add material to, or maintain a weblog

blog comment

comment to a blog post, usually personally addressing the author

blog post

any post content on any blog site

Brit

Shortened form of the word “British” pertaining to any person from the country of Great Britain

bum marketing

articles written about specific niches to generate customer traffic

call to action

target of interest to potential customers to cause them to interact with the offer from the advertiser

click

pressing down and rapid release of a mouse button

coder

someone who writes code for websites and/or programs

community

online group of people who generally having similar interests

control panel

window where specific control functions are stored and carried out; any panel, virtual or otherwise where lay the controls of something

copy

duplicate; mimic or replicate

CPU

central processing unit – “brains” of a computer, where most calculations take place

crawl

action of search engine to determine particular information about your site

Ctrl

“control” key on your keyboard, usually bottom left key

database

electronic filing system; any compilation of information or data provided virtually or otherwise

dedicated server

single computer or server which serves only one or one small group of websites held under one owner’s name

demographic

group of people all sharing a common variable

DM

direct message; in reference to Twitter, a private tweet to someone followed; any personal and private message conveyed from one person to another by electronic means, such as a mobile device or computer

DNS

Domain Name System; translates domain names into IP addresses

domain

defined by the IP address, all computers sharing the same root IP are part of a domain

dotcom applications

colloquial term for a web application

download

to acquire and store data from another user, website or server

drag and drop

to place a mouse cursor over a specific object or group of objects before clicking and dragging them from one location or file to another on a computer

E

e-Book

any body of work provided for viewing, printing, or presentation via electronic means, such as downloading files to a system; books usually available in PDF See PDF; a portable electronic device used to download and read books or magazines that are in digital form

e-Business

any corporation/small business that operates online to generate revenue dealing both in information and tangible goods

e-Commerce

marketing and transactions conducted via the Internet

email list

list of email addresses, usually gathered off the internet; may be private or commercial

email marketing

marketing technique to engage clients through electronic mail correspondence

email

electronic mail; online mailing system allowing the transmission of information from one user to another via the internet

e-Zine

Any online magazine

F

feed

a stream of information; also referred to as “stream” to handle content management needs of users and readers of content, alike

footer

closing comments, additional information at the bottom of a page

forum

online message board  or community

FTP

file transfer protocol; enables mass  file transfer; a quick way to effectively move bulk files

G

google

(Noun) free online search engine (See Trade Names)

(Verb) to search online, no matter which search engine is actually performing the search ie: to “google” something means to look it up online

gravity

a Clickbank term referring to seller competition for a product

H

header

text located in the top margin of a document; text entered here cascades to the header section of every page of the document; often contains information such as page number or date of draft; found in View dropdown menu (Also, see footer)

hidden text

text that can only be viewed by viewing the source code of a website; in terms of HTML coding, denoted within code using this syntax: <!—TEXTCODE–>

Hoplink

link which takes the customer to the vendor’s HopLink target URL

host

computer system that is accessed by a user working at a remote location

hosting

act of storing and facilitating a website or database

HTML

hypertext markup language; original design coding used to create static client-side Web pages (Also, see XHTML)

hub

common connection point for devices in a network

hyperlink

way of connecting different Web pages together on the Internet

index

sequential arrangement of material, esp. in alphabetical or numerical order.

Internet

virtual network connecting millions of computers worldwide; also referred to as “the Net,” “the Web,” and “the information superhighway;” originally designed and used by the US military; opened for free public use in year

Internet marketing

the marketing of products or services over the Internet; See also e-Commerce

IT

information systems technology; the development, installation, and implementation of computer systems and applications, e.g., the building and management of databases

K

keyword

index entry that identifies a specific record or document; in terms of metatagging, the words or phrases that determine relevance to web crawlers

L

landing page

main page of a website; index or “home” page of a website

lens

Squidoo term for an article page; See also Tradename Glossary entry for Squidoo

link

digital or virtual reference point to and/or from another digital or virtual document

link farms

any group of web sites that all hyperlink to every other site in the group

linking

connecting automatically as the result of clicking on a link; as in “linking to or from” an object, text, or graphics, to or from a document or other object

login

(Noun) variable assigned to a person specifying who they are on a networking system (LAN or WAN)

(Verb) to type in a user name and password allowing you to enter a restricted site

loss leader

product sold at a low price (at cost or below cost) to stimulate other, profitable sales; also referred to as “leader”

M

Marketing Mix

the combination of product, price, place (distribution), and promotion (“the 4 P’s of marketing”

markup

act of setting a price higher than actual original cost

meta tags

found within the original HTML hard coding of web pages; tags used to determine specific keywords for web crawlers to find and attach in their databases to specific web pages, thereby improving search engine indexing; less emphasis by search engines and parameters of these tags now than in earlier days of HTML Web page design and coding

micro-blogging

blogging shorted to 140 characters or less. Twitter is the most popular example of this type of service

MIME

Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions; the Internet standard for mail formatting

niche

a specialized interest market; small corner of the market, e.g., a surgeon who specializes in reconstructing earlobes would be considered working in a nich market of medicine

O

on / off site SEO

search engine optimization techniques that are preformed both online and offline

opt-in

a form of direct marketing utilizing electronic mail for communication commercial or non-profit messages to an audience

P

paid link

one-way inbound link purchased from another website

paste

act of attaching a duplicated item

patent

legal document entitling the holder to the sole legal rights to a specific process, tangible object, or informational asset

PC

personal computer

PDF

portable document format used for representing two-dimensional documents in a manner independent of the application software, hardware, and/or operating system

php

php hypertext preprocessor; language used to communicate with servers for hosting and interfacing with websites

ping

the process of sending a packet of information to an IP address

plug-in

hardware or software module that adds a specific feature or service to a larger system or program

PPC

pay-per-click online marketing formula used to price advertisements; the alternative to “organic” search results

Pro blogger

experienced blogger; someone who makes money from a blog site; See also Tradename glossary ProBlogger Darren Rowse

proportion

comparative relationship between things or magnitudes as to size, quantity, number, etc.; usually expressed as a ratio

PR

public relations; actions of a corporation, store, government, individual, etc., in promoting goodwill between it’self and the public, the community, employees,  and/or customers

purge

to systematically and permanently remove old and/or unneeded data

R

recurring tweet

script that runs to periodically send out a tweet with a specified message

re-tweet

to repost a tweet from someone else on Twitter

RSS

really simple syndication;  used to describe the de facto standard for the syndication of Web content

RT

re-tweet; Twitter term meaning to re-post a tweet

S

self-host

to host one’s own website on a personal or privately owned server

SEO

search engine optimization; strategic improvement of volume and/or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via organic search results based upon keywords in Web design, branding and visibility to promote relevancy factors for all pages associated with the product, service or company implementing the strategies

server

computer system or program that provides database services to other computers or computer programs

social media

content created by people using highly-accessible and scalable publishing technologies

software

program consisting of code and no physical parts

spam

any unwanted advertisements in any media form;  electronic junk mail or junk newsgroup postings

SQL

structured query language; SQL is a standardized query language for requesting information from a database

standalone

standalone entity is something that has no dependencies

T

text editor

program or person who edit’s text or code; typical text editors for Microsoft Operating Systems include MS Word, Notepad, and Wordpad; other operating systems provide their own applicable text editors as well

theme

specified color pattern and or subject matter

trademark

a distinctive mark or feature particularly characteristic of or identified with a person or thing; a legally protected logo

tweeps

Twitter-speak for “people”

tweet

to update a Twitter account for those following

tweepular

Twitter-speak for “popular;”  specifically referring to popularity on Twitter; See also Tradename Glossary term Tweepular

Twitter follower

someone who is following someone who is tweeting on Twitter

Twitter username

name user chooses to represent him- or herself on Twitter

Twitter-bomb

unintentionally using exactly the maximum 140 characters allocated for each tweet

Twitterfeed

updates to a Twitter profile; also referred to as “Twitterstream”

Twitterstream

updates to a Twitter profile; also referred to as “Twitterfeed”

business and/or transactions that are conducted online, through a website, email or otherwise; see also e-Commerce

web crawler

program that goes through URL links searching for information

weblogging

process of updating a website with important information usually in reverse chronological order

website

page on the internet containing information; digital medium

webspace

virtual or digital space where a website resides; also referred to as a “Website”

white hat

process of properly tagging SEOs to generate organic hit’s; method of attaching one’s wireless connector to an existing network “hotspot” legally and with the account holder’s full knowledge of the sharing of bandwidth; common in public places frequented by people using wireless electronics while outside their home

World Wide Web

system of extensively interlinked hypertext documents; a branch of the Internet; also referred to as WWW

X

XHTML

extensible hypertext markup language; specifications designed to move HTML to conform to XML syntax standards of coding by the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium); newer Web pages are formatted in XHTML

XML

a general-purpose specification for creating custom markup languages; classified as an extensible language, allowing the user to define the mark-up elements
